A Celebration of Motherhood and Community
Baby Bliss, a prominent baby store in Ghana, has been hosting an annual event called Mum’s Day Out for the past four years. This free-to-attend gathering is designed to bring families together for fun while also offering mothers a platform to network and promote their businesses. Since its launch in 2019, the event has grown significantly, attracting more vendors and attendees each year. It has become a highly anticipated occasion for businesses looking to connect with potential customers and for patrons seeking great deals in a relaxed setting.
This year’s edition, titled “The Grand Edition,” will take place at the Palm Convention Centre located at La Palm Royal Beach Hotel on Saturday, August 2. As the fifth installment of the event, organizers have moved it to a larger venue, promising an even more engaging experience with more activities, discounted sales, product demonstrations, exciting competitions, and giveaways.
Focus on Mental Health and Practical Skills
In an interview, the founder of Baby Bliss, Ms. Alexis Ntsiakoh, highlighted that the event is not just about shopping and entertainment but also about addressing important issues affecting mothers and families. She mentioned that there will be discussions on mental health, particularly focusing on postpartum depression and the challenges faced by single mothers.
“There are many mothers going through postpartum depression and sometimes separation while dealing with the challenge of raising kids alone. We have two counsellors who will speak on how to deal with such difficult circumstances. We also have seminar sessions with professionals who will talk about grooming and how to style your body after birth. These are issues that many mothers can relate to,” she explained.
Additionally, the event will feature hands-on sessions on handling emergencies such as home fires and providing first aid. The Ghana Ambulance Service will conduct first aid training, while the Ghana Fire Service will offer safety tips to prevent fires at home. Ms. Ntsiakoh emphasized that the goal is to create an environment where participants can enjoy themselves while also gaining valuable knowledge.
Strategic Sessions for Vendors
For the businesses participating in the event, Mum’s Day Out serves as more than just a sales opportunity. It provides vendors with the chance to learn and grow their businesses. Ahead of the event, Ms. Ntsiakoh will lead a strategic session for vendors, guiding them on scaling and sustaining growth, building long-term structures, effective marketing, and smart pricing strategies.
Other topics covered include selling strategies for fairs and trade shows, event preparation, follow-ups, and managing costs and overheads. Ms. Ntsiakoh believes these sessions will help vendors make the most of the platform during and after the fair.
She noted that over 90% of the vendors are women-owned businesses, many of whom started with the event from the very first edition. “I have watched their businesses grow along with me. I try to give them a lot of guidance and training, and this event is the only time in the year when I make myself available to other business owners to ask questions, ideas, and guidance. For these businesses, my focus is on helping them grow their business long term.”
Fun and Family-Friendly Activities
Parents are encouraged to bring their children to the event, which features specially designed play areas and vendors offering fun activities for kids. There will also be a lounge area for men to relax, network, or play video games. The event will include a food court with various vendors, music in the background, and numerous giveaways.
One of the highlights of the event is the runway contest for pregnant women, where the winner receives gifts from sponsors. “Our competitions are fun activities that young people do when they go out; but this time, we let the mothers compete and win exciting prizes. It could be a makeover from our sponsor. Mothers go through a lot and the whole idea is to give them a day off to let their hair down,” said Ms. Ntsiakoh.
Giving Back to the Community
Each year, Baby Bliss also supports local non-profit organizations by raising funds or making donations. This year, the event will provide non-profits with the opportunity to speak to guests, raise awareness about their causes, and collect funds for their projects. The fair will open at 8 am, marking the start of a day filled with celebration, learning, and community support.
