Kisii lady working in Iran stranded after sending KSh 38k to wrong recipient, shares WhatsApp chats
  • A mother of two was sending money to her family from abroad when she mistakenly transferred it to the wrong person
  • Upon realizing the error, she contacted the recipient, who promised to reverse the transaction as soon as possible
  • Speaking to zaia news.co.ke, the woman vented her frustration after the recipient failed to honor his word

A distressed woman from Kisii county has turned to the internet for help after a costly mistake affected both her peace of mind and finances.

Delvin Moraa Magangi had intended to send money to a family member but accidentally transferred it to the wrong number.

She failed to double-check the last digit, which led her to unintentionally "gift" a stranger over KSh 38,000.

Realizing the mistake, she reached out to the recipient via WhatsApp, asking him to reverse the transaction.

"Hi. Will refund all the money of yours tomorrow morning. I know the pain of a child," part of the chat read.

What does Moraa do in Iran?

Unfortunately, the man, identified as Holla Chelangat, did not fulfill his promise. Moraa, who works in Iran as a caregiver, told zaia news.co.ke that Chelangat later blocked her number and switched off his phone.

"I was sending the money to my mum as she was sick and needed to go to the hospital. When I realized I had mistakenly sent the money to Chelangat, I tried to talk to the bank to reverse it, but they said they could not. I reached out to Safaricom, but they told me the money could not be reversed because it had already been withdrawn," she explained.
"He promised to return the money but later disappeared. I am so stressed, and I don't know what to do."

When did Moraa travel to Iran?

Moraa, who traveled to Iran in 2024, revealed that she had requested a salary advance from her boss because her mother, who suffers from multiple medical conditions, urgently needed hospital treatment.

"I am my family's breadwinner. I don't know what to do next. I even reached out to Sammy Ondimu Ngare, who shared my story, but there has been no response so far. My mum is very sick and needs treatment, but I’m stranded here," she said tearfully.

Kenyans advise Dalvin Moraa

Facebook users took to the comment section to share their thoughts and similar experiences:

Kelvin Kimani Mbugua:

"I know someone who was sent KSh 20,000 by someone in Dubai but chose to use the money. She was traced and made to pay double the amount."

Pro O Samson Matagaro:

"If the number is registered on M-Pesa, the police can get his ID and trace him to his house in the village! The police should help the public free of charge, they are not lawyers."

Honeyline Baibe Jey:

"I hope he returns the money. There are still good people out there. I did the same with school fees, chaii! The money went to a Kamba guy, and he told me he’d return it. But he had a Fuliza balance of KSh 7,000, so I told him to send whatever remained. God bless that Kamba guy wherever he is."

Lydiah Nyabs:

"I’m a victim too. Same case the person blocked me. I reported him, and he was taken to Kamiti. I followed the case for two years nothing happened. I was so tired. KSh 70,000 just gone like that. Maybe he returned it and the police took it."

Fay Kays:

"Let the lady go to the DCI. Yes, she might be taxed heavily, but she’ll get the money back. Patience is needed, and she might even make the guy pay extra for the inconvenience."

Kenyan man sends money to wrong number

In a related story, a Kenyan man was frustrated after mistakenly sending KSh 8,000 to the wrong number.

Mustapha Hassan accidentally transferred the money to Sabina Kagwiria via M-Pesa, who also failed to return it.

He resorted to reporting the issue to the police, hoping the authorities would assist.
