Over 1,600 Graduates from University of Kigali

A Milestone in Academic Achievement

On August 8, the University of Kigali celebrated its 9th graduation ceremony at the Intare Conference Arena in Kigali, marking a significant milestone for 1,656 students from the Class of 2024. The event drew a diverse audience including students, parents, guardians, representatives from affiliated institutions, members of the diplomatic corps, and various dignitaries. Among the guests was Yusuf Murangwa, the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, who served as the chief guest.

The graduating class showcased a wide range of academic achievements. It included 525 Master’s degree recipients, 38 postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) holders, and Bachelor’s degree graduates from several schools. Specifically, 593 students graduated from the School of Business Management and Economics, 360 from the School of Computing and IT, 141 from the School of Law, and 37 from the School of Education. The gender distribution among the graduates was relatively balanced, with 848 females and 808 males. This balance reflects the institution's ongoing commitment to promoting gender equity and fostering an inclusive academic environment.

Inspirational Messages from University Leaders

Philibert Afrika, Chairman of the Governing Body and a member of the Board of Promoters, praised the graduates for their perseverance and resilience. He highlighted their dedication to learning and applying knowledge effectively. "I am truly proud of your achievement and confident that as you leave the University of Kigali, you will become proud ambassadors and problem-solvers for your families, communities, countries, and the world," he said.

Afrika encouraged the graduates to embrace the opportunities and challenges ahead. He emphasized the importance of continuous learning and building strong networks. "As you embark on your careers, remember that you are equipped to help build 'The Overcomer: Transforming Challenges into Opportunities,' for yourselves and for those around you," he added.

Minister Yusuf Murangwa echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that graduation is more than a ceremonial event. "This is why the theme for today’s celebration, The Overcomer: Transforming Challenges into Opportunities, is so meaningful. It perfectly captures not only what you’ve accomplished to get here but also the mindset you will need to thrive in the years to come," he noted.

Murangwa acknowledged the complex world the graduates are entering, filled with challenges such as climate change, inequality, technological disruption, and economic volatility. He urged them to pursue their paths with passion and integrity. "Build networks. Learn continuously. Listen deeply. And never underestimate the influence you can have, no matter where you begin," he advised.

Growth and Vision of the University

Manasseh Nshuti, Chairman of the Board of Promoters, reflected on the university's growth since its inception. Starting with just 35 students, the university has expanded to over 8,000 students across Kigali and Musanze campuses. "This phenomenal transformation didn’t happen by chance. It is the result of a well-thought-out strategy, collaborative efforts, and a strong commitment to our core mission — delivering quality, relevant, and future-oriented education," he said.

Nshuti emphasized the university's motto, "Labour for the Future," which encapsulates the spirit of forward-thinking resilience. He encouraged the graduates to be leaders and problem-solvers, equipped with emotional intelligence, leadership potential, and ethical grounding. "You are the overcomers. You are no longer students, you are now the standard bearers of a new era," he said.

Carlos Fernando Sotz, Chancellor of the University of Kigali, expressed gratitude for the graduates' choice of the university as their academic home. He highlighted the university's commitment to quality education that transcends borders. "Our academic model is one that champions both local relevance and global competitiveness," he stated.

Preparing Graduates for the Future

George Kimathi, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kigali, acknowledged the challenges in the job market, particularly youth unemployment. However, he emphasized that UoK graduates are not passive job seekers but creators, innovators, and problem-solvers. "You leave here with competencies that transcend borders and industries, ready to capitalize on opportunity and even create it where it does not yet exist," he said.

The university offers academic programming through six schools, including the Graduate School, School of Business Management and Economics, School of Computing and Information Technology, School of Law, School of Education, and School of Executive and Professional Programmes. Additionally, the School of Professional and Executive Programmes collaborates with the Centre for Economic Governance and Leadership (CEGL) and Enterprise Business Solutions (EBS), serving as the university’s hub for Executive Education, Consulting, and Advisory services.

The University of Kigali continues to be recognized as one of the top five universities in Rwanda, distinguished by the caliber of its academic staff and its commitment to excellence.
