ECP Removes Senate, NA Leaders, and PTI MPs

Disqualification of Opposition Leaders in Pakistan's National Assembly

The National Assembly of Pakistan has officially announced the disqualification of several opposition members, including the Leader of the Opposition, Omar Ayub Khan. This decision was made by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and was formally communicated by the National Assembly Speaker, Ayaz Sadiq, despite strong protests from opposition members.

During the proceedings, the speaker confirmed that the ECP had declared several prominent figures disqualified from their seats. These individuals include Omar Ayub Khan, Zartaj Gul, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, Ahmed Chattha, Rai Hassan Nawaz, Jamshed Dasti, and Rai Haider Ali. The speaker emphasized that it was his duty to formally record these disqualifications during the session.

With the removal of these leaders, the National Assembly will currently function without a formal Leader of the Opposition until the opposition benches nominate a new leader and request the Speaker’s office for their election.

Government Efforts to Counter Misinformation

In a separate development, the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, highlighted the government’s efforts to combat misinformation. He stated that state media organizations, such as the Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation, PTV, and the Associated Press of Pakistan, have established mechanisms to effectively counter false narratives.

During the Question-Hour, Tarar informed the house that these platforms are successfully countering anti-Pakistan narratives promoted by external enemies. He also mentioned the establishment of the country's first Digital Communication Department, which plays a crucial role in identifying and addressing misinformation through its Twitter handle, Fact Checker.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is collaborating with other departments to implement strategies that educate the public on identifying credible sources of information. There is a particular focus on promoting digital and media literacy among various segments of society, especially the youth and students, to help them discern accurate information in the era of rapid digital communication.

Senate Leadership Vacant Following Disqualification

Meanwhile, the Senate Secretariat removed Senator Syed Shibli Faraz from the position of Leader of the Opposition in the House. This followed his disqualification by the ECP due to his conviction in the May 9 riots case. Despite an earlier order from the Peshawar High Court (PHC) halting the ECP from taking action against PTI's opposition leaders, the Senate Secretariat proceeded with the removal.

The court had issued identical orders stating that the convictions were not final and that the ECP had acted prematurely before the outcomes of appeals were determined. As a result, the office of the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate became vacant effective August 5, 2025, following the disqualification and de-notification of Senator Faraz by the ECP under Article 63 of the Constitution.

Despite this, the PTI, which holds a majority in the Senate, still has the power to appoint a new opposition leader of its choice.

Legal Consequences of May 9 Violence

Last month, an anti-terrorism court in Faisalabad sentenced over 100 PTI workers and leaders, including Senator Faraz, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Omar Ayub Khan, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, and Zartaj Gul Wazir, to 10 years of imprisonment for their involvement in cases related to the May 9 violence.

On August 5, the electoral watchdog disqualified Senate and NA opposition leaders and other PTI lawmakers following their convictions by the courts. The May 9 incident in 2023 saw PTI supporters staging violent demonstrations across the country, protesting the arrest of party founder Imran Khan. These protests led to the vandalism of military installations and government buildings.

This ongoing legal and political turmoil highlights the complex challenges facing Pakistan's democratic institutions and the need for continued efforts to uphold the rule of law and ensure transparency in governance.
