Pakistan and Iran Strengthen Bilateral Ties Amid Regional Challenges
During a recent press briefing, the Foreign Office Spokesperson, Ambassador Shafqat Ali Khan, highlighted the deepening relationship between Pakistan and Iran. The two nations have reaffirmed their commitment to fostering stronger bilateral ties, promoting regional peace, and standing in solidarity with the Palestinian and Kashmiri communities.
The Iranian President, Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, made a state visit to Pakistan on August 2-3, marking an important moment for regional cooperation. His visit was accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi and senior ministers, underscoring the significance of the engagement.
Key Meetings and Discussions
President Pezeshkian met with several Pakistani leaders, including President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar. These meetings focused on strengthening relations and addressing common challenges.
President Zardari emphasized the fraternal ties between Pakistan and Iran, rooted in shared religion, culture, and mutual respect. He strongly condemned the Israeli aggression against Iran and praised the Iranian nation's unity and bravery during the recent conflict. He expressed hope that the visit would further strengthen bilateral relations.
In return, President Pezeshkian thanked Pakistan for its consistent support during the war. He commended Pakistan's diplomatic efforts in advocating for de-escalation and peaceful resolution of conflicts.
Expanding Trade and Economic Cooperation
During discussions with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, both leaders emphasized the importance of economic collaboration. They aimed to increase bilateral trade from the current $3 billion to $10 billion. Key initiatives included enhancing barter trade, increasing export quotas for rice, fruits, and meat, and operationalizing border markets.
Senator Ishaq Dar also met with his Iranian counterpart, Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, to discuss bilateral and regional issues. These preliminary discussions laid the groundwork for future cooperation.
Addressing Regional Security Concerns
Ambassador Khan addressed concerns about terrorism in Pakistan, stating that insurgency in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is linked to Afghanistan. He mentioned that Pakistan has been drawing attention to terrorist sanctuaries in Afghanistan, emphasizing the need for a stable Afghanistan for regional security.
Humanitarian Aid to Gaza
Pakistan has continued its humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza. On August 3, Senator Ishaq Dar oversaw the dispatch of the 17th aid consignment, which included 100 tons of food, powdered milk, and medical equipment. A day later, the 18th consignment, consisting of dry rations, meals, and medicines, was sent. This brings Pakistan's total humanitarian assistance to Gaza to 18 shipments totaling 1,815 tons.
Senator Dar reiterated Pakistan's call for an immediate ceasefire, protection of civilians, and a political solution based on the pre-1967 borders, in line with UN Security Council resolutions.
Rejection of Allegations and Condemnation of Violence
Ambassador Khan rejected allegations regarding the involvement of Pakistani nationals in the Ukraine conflict, stating that no verifiable evidence has been presented. He emphasized that Pakistan would seek clarification from Ukrainian authorities.
He also condemned the storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque by Israeli settlers, calling it a deliberate attempt to inflame religious sentiments and destabilize the region. He urged the UN and international community to act urgently to protect the sanctity of Al-Aqsa and uphold Palestinian rights.
Commemorating the Kashmir Cause
On the sixth anniversary of India's unilateral actions in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), Ambassador Khan highlighted Pakistan's unwavering support for the Kashmir cause. Special messages were issued by key leaders, reiterating their political, diplomatic, and moral stance.
Senator Ishaq Dar wrote to several international bodies to highlight the deteriorating human rights situation in IIOJK and urge the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions. A solidarity walk was held in Islamabad, involving Foreign Office staff, civil society, and citizens.
