A Newborn Honeymoon Turned Tragic

A newlywed couple from Australia found their dream honeymoon in Mexico turned into a nightmare when the groom fell seriously ill. Layton McCann, 29, and Whitney McCann, 30, had just tied the knot on April 5 and were looking forward to celebrating their marriage with a trip that included the United States and Mexico. However, their plans were abruptly disrupted when Layton began experiencing severe stomach pains shortly after arriving in Playa Del Carmen.

The couple had spent two weeks in the U.S. before traveling to the coastal resort town in Mexico. Just days after their arrival, Layton started feeling unwell. His wife, Whitney, immediately sought help, and the hotel they were staying at had a doctor on call. The doctor examined Layton and provided some treatment, but his condition worsened rapidly.

Bronte Holland, Whitney’s sister, shared details about the situation. “They called the doctor into the room, he gave Layton something and then left. My sister called the doctor back after 10 minutes because he was really not well,” she said. Layton was then rushed to the hospital, where he has remained for nearly two weeks.

Tests revealed that Layton had contracted an infection that led to pancreatitis, which caused severe inflammation of his pancreas. He was placed in an induced coma and put on a ventilator due to the severity of his condition. His mother and mother-in-law arrived in Mexico on Sunday, but Layton remains too unstable to be evacuated back to Australia.

Possible Causes and Medical Challenges

Ms. Holland explained that while the exact cause of the infection is still unknown, it could have been triggered by food or alcohol consumed during their honeymoon. “The pancreas was all inflamed and it started to die, so they've put him in a coma,” she said. Despite the uncertainty, the family is grateful for the care Layton is receiving.

However, the language barrier and the complexity of the medical situation have added to the stress. Ms. Holland, who is a nurse, noted that the medical team in Mexico is doing a good job, conducting daily CT scans and monitoring his blood work. Additionally, Whitney has access to a doctor in Australia through her travel insurance, which helps bridge the communication gap.

Impact on the Family and Financial Strain

Layton’s health decline has deeply affected his family. Known for his active lifestyle, Layton is an avid cricket player and runs daily. “He's very physically active and a healthy young bloke,” Ms. Holland said. The sudden illness has left the family shaken and overwhelmed.

While the couple’s medical expenses are covered by their travel insurance, they still face significant financial challenges. Whitney, who owns a hair salon, has had to miss work, leading to lost income. To help alleviate the pressure, Ms. Holland created a GoFundMe campaign to support the couple during this difficult time.

Emotional Toll and Uncertain Future

The situation has taken a heavy emotional toll on everyone involved. “It's just so sad, they only just got married. They should be having the time of their lives on their honeymoon, this is not how it's supposed to go,” Ms. Holland said. She described the heartbreak of seeing her younger sister in such a vulnerable state, adding, “It just breaks my heart and I feel so helpless.”

As Layton continues his battle for recovery, the family remains hopeful. Their journey highlights the unpredictable nature of travel and the importance of being prepared for unexpected challenges. For now, they focus on supporting each other and hoping for a full recovery.
