European Leaders Reiterate Stance on Ukraine Peace Talks
European leaders, including UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, have emphasized that any peace talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine must begin with the current line of contact as a starting point. This position was outlined in a joint statement signed by Starmer and the leaders of France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Finland, and the European Commission. The statement clearly states that Ukraine should not cede any territory, a stance that has been reinforced amid recent discussions about potential territorial exchanges.
The comments come in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s suggestion that there might be “some swapping of territories” in any ceasefire deal. On Sunday, the White House stated that Trump is open to a three-way summit with Putin and Zelensky but initially plans to meet only with Putin, as requested by Russia.
Zelensky described the meeting with Lammy and others as constructive, stating that all his arguments were heard. He reiterated that the path to peace for Ukraine must be determined together with Ukraine, emphasizing this as a key principle. Earlier, he had rejected any territorial concessions, declaring that Ukrainians would not give their land to the occupier.
