Experts emphasize the need for greater awareness among consumers about the hidden fats and sugars present in commonly consumed foods like pizzas, burgers, samosas, vada paav, and kachori. Dr. Charu Sadana, a Dietetics Officer at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, highlighted the importance of transparency in food labeling. She suggested that all eateries should clearly display the oil and sugar content of their food items. According to her, this would empower individuals to understand the type of fat used and the amount of sugar present in their meals. Such knowledge can help people make wiser decisions and ultimately reduce the risk of developing chronic health conditions.

The Union Health Ministry has taken significant steps to address this issue. In June, they proposed that popular food items in schools, offices, and other institutions should prominently display information on oil and sugar content. This initiative aims to promote healthier eating habits and combat the rising rates of obesity and non-communicable diseases across the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also been vocal about the need for a shift towards healthier lifestyles. In March 2025, he urged citizens to reduce their consumption of cooking oil by 10 percent each month. He emphasized that small changes in daily habits could lead to substantial improvements in public health. His call to action was part of a broader effort to address the alarming rise in obesity, which is expected to affect over 440 million Indians by 2050.

Modi’s concerns are well-founded, given the increasing impact of obesity on all age groups, including the youth. During the opening ceremony of the 38th National Games in Dehradun, he stressed the importance of physical activity and a balanced diet. He encouraged people to incorporate regular exercise into their routines, whether through walking or more structured workouts. Additionally, he advised reducing the intake of unhealthy fats and oils, suggesting a gradual reduction of 10 percent per month in cooking oil usage.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the role of the Fit India Movement in raising awareness about fitness and healthy living. He noted that the movement has played a key role in educating the public about the benefits of an active lifestyle and nutritious food. By promoting physical activity and proper nutrition, the movement aims to create a healthier nation.
