These examples highlight the importance of having a sufficient number of libraries to meet the needs of the population.
In Pakistan, the situation is quite different. A research paper titled "Services of Public Libraries in the Age of Technology: A Pakistani Perspective" emphasizes the need for accurate data on the number of public libraries in the country. According to another study conducted by Mahmood in 2008, there are over 300 public libraries in Pakistan. However, with a current population of 240.5 million and a projected increase to 403 million by 2050, the ratio of libraries to people remains extremely low.
Even if the number of libraries were increased to 500, it would mean one library for every 481,000 people. If the number were doubled to 1,000, the ratio would still be one library per 240,500 people. And even if the number reached 2,000, the ratio would only improve to one library for every 120,250 people. Comparing this to Finland’s ratio of one library per 7,375 people or Germany’s one library per 9,525 people highlights the urgent need for expansion in Pakistan.
