Buriram United Set to Dominate Thai League 1 Again
Every year, as the Thai football season approaches, fans across the country find themselves asking a familiar question: Can any team stop Buriram United from claiming another Thai League 1 title? This year is no different. The reigning champions are expected to once again dominate the league, and their preparations have been nothing short of impressive.
The new season kicks off this evening with Ratchaburi facing off against newcomers Kanchanaburi Power at home. However, the real action begins tomorrow when Buriram United takes on Lamphun Warriors. This match marks the start of their defense of the title, and they are already showing signs of being in top form.
Buriram United has made significant moves during the offseason, strengthening their squad with both foreign and local talents. Players like Guilherme Bissoli, Curtis Good, Kenneth Dougall, Suphanat Mueanta, Theerathon Bunmathan, and Supachai Chaided have all contributed to the team's success in recent seasons. But this time, the club has gone even further by bringing in new signings such as Juan Ibiza, Fejsal Mulic, Shayne Pattynama, Filip Stojkovic, Robert Zulj, Nemanja Nikolic, and Ilhan Fandi. These additions have sent shockwaves through the league, making it clear that Buriram is determined to secure their fifth consecutive title.
The challenges ahead for Buriram will be numerous. They are set to compete in multiple competitions, including the Thai League 1, the FA Cup, the League Cup, the ASEAN Club Championship (Shopee Cup), and the AFC Champions League Elite. Their performance in the AFC Champions League last season was notable, as they reached the quarter-finals before falling to Al-Ahli of Saudi Arabia. With their current squad, it’s hard to see anyone stopping them from reclaiming domestic glory.
Bangkok United Struggles to Regain Form
While Buriram United looks unstoppable, other teams are finding it difficult to keep up. Last season’s runners-up, Bangkok United, faced a setback when they lost 3-0 to Chinese club Chengdu Rongcheng in a qualifying playoff for the AFC Champions League Elite. This loss ended their hopes of reaching the group stages.
Chairman Kachorn Chiaravanont expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance last season, noting that they didn’t lose a single match in the second half of the season. However, he also mentioned that the club plans to make significant changes to their roster before the new season starts. Their only major signing so far has been Teerasil Dangda, an aging but experienced striker from BG Pathum United.
Despite these efforts, Bangkok United hasn't been as active in the transfer market as some of their rivals. Under coach Totchtawan Sripan, they hope to win at least one trophy this season, but their chances remain uncertain.
BG Pathum United Aim to Challenge Again
BG Pathum United, the former champions, are expected to be strong contenders this season. Their return to form depends largely on their ability to maintain consistency. The club has brought back key players like Ekanit Panya and Jaroensak Wonggorn from the J-League, while also adding new signings such as goalkeeper Slavisa Bogdanovic and Jordan Emaviwe. Alongside veterans like Chanathip Songkrasin, Sarach Yooyen, and Saranon Anuin, the Rabbits have a solid foundation to challenge for the title.
Port FC Looks to Improve
Port FC, another prominent club, has made some strategic moves to strengthen their squad. They have hired Alexandre Gama, a Brazilian coach who previously led Buriram United to multiple titles. His arrival is expected to bring stability and experience to the team.
Port FC has also added several new players, including Brazilian defenders Matheus Lins and Matheus Pato, as well as Iraqi star Rebin Sulaka. Other signings include Colombian midfielder Brayan Perea, Filipino goalkeeper Michael Falkesgaard, and Brazilian players Kaka Mendes and Lucas Tocantins. Local stars like Teerasak Poeiphimai, Peeradol Chamratsamee, Suphanan Bureerat, and Somporn Yos have chosen to stay with the club.
Newcomers and Relegation Fears
Ratchaburi, while not expected to be a title contender, has made several new signings, including Ikhsan Fandi, Jeremy Corinus, Jesse Curran, and Gabriel Mutombo. They aim to reach the finals of either the FA Cup or the League Cup.
At the bottom of the table, Ayutthaya United, Nakhon Ratchasima, and Sukhothai are seen as potential relegation candidates. Ayutthaya United, in particular, is being tipped for a quick return to the second tier. Nakhon Ratchasima narrowly avoided relegation last season, but they face a tough challenge this time around. Sukhothai, known for their struggles in the top flight, are also likely to face difficulties this season.
