Ukraine Proposes New Peace Talks with Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for an accelerated pace of negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow, announcing a formal proposal for a new round of peace talks. The discussions are expected to take place next week, according to Zelenskyy’s statement during his nightly address. He emphasized the need to "step up the momentum of the negotiations" and highlighted the importance of achieving a ceasefire.
The proposal comes amid continued military activity from Russian forces. On Saturday, Zelenskyy reported that Russia launched approximately 300 drones and 30 missiles in overnight attacks on Ukraine. These strikes resulted in one death in Odesa, a port city, and caused damage to critical infrastructure in Sumy, located in the northeastern part of the country.
Zelenskyy shared images and videos of the aftermath, showing flaming buildings and firefighters working to contain the fires. The mayor of Odesa, Gennadiy Trukhanov, confirmed that over 20 drones targeted the city from different directions, leading to significant damage to civilian infrastructure. In Sumy, the attacks left thousands without power.
Accusations of Weaponized Deportations
Kyiv has accused Russia of "weaponizing" deportations, following the evacuation of 43 Ukrainian citizens from a detention facility near the Georgia-Russian border. Most of those held were former prisoners who had completed their sentences in Russia but were subsequently deported.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced the evacuation via social media, noting that many of the individuals were stripped of their identification documents and left in dire conditions. Maria Belkina, head of Volunteers Tbilisi, described the situation at the facility as "inhumane," citing a lack of food, water, and sanitation. Some detainees reportedly had serious medical conditions, including suspected tuberculosis and HIV.
Sybiha stated that Russia has significantly increased the number of Ukrainian nationals deported to the Georgia border since June. Kyiv has requested that Moscow deport individuals directly to Ukraine rather than sending them to distant third countries. Rights groups estimate that up to 800 more Ukrainians could be deported in the coming weeks.
Australia Delivers Abrams Tanks to Ukraine
Australia has confirmed that it is delivering 49 US-made M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine as part of a $980 million military aid package. The tanks, valued at $160 million, are expected to arrive over the coming months. Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles stated that the tanks will play a crucial role in supporting Ukraine's defense against Russia's invasion.
Australia has been a key non-NATO supporter of Ukraine, providing military equipment, ammunition, and other forms of aid. The country has also imposed sanctions on over 1,000 Russian individuals and entities and banned the export of aluminum products to Russia.
Russia Claims Success in Drone Defense
Russia’s Defense Ministry reported that it successfully downed 87 Ukrainian drones across central, western, and southern regions of the country. Of these, 48 were intercepted near the border in Bryansk. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin added that 13 drones targeting the capital were shot down after midnight.
Sobyanin mentioned that specialists are examining the wreckage to determine the extent of the damage. Despite these claims, the attacks have continued to cause significant disruption in several Ukrainian cities.

The conflict between Ukraine and Russia remains intense, with both sides reporting ongoing military actions. While efforts by US President Donald Trump to broker a ceasefire have faced challenges, the situation continues to evolve rapidly.
As the war enters its fifth year, the international community closely monitors developments, with nations like Australia playing a growing role in supporting Ukraine’s defense. The calls for peace talks and increased diplomatic engagement highlight the urgent need for a resolution to the ongoing crisis.
