A Young Driver's Journey and Reflections

Formula 1 drivers often focus on the future, striving to improve their performance and secure their place on the grid. However, it is rare for them to reflect on what they have already achieved, especially during their careers. Gabriel Bortoleto is an exception. At just 20 years old, his youth is evident, but so is his thoughtful insight and maturity.

Over the past two years, Bortoleto’s life has undergone significant changes. He was not yet a single-seater champion when he began his journey in the 2023 FIA F3 championship. His success at Monza marked a turning point, leading to a successful transition to F2, where he won the title in his first attempt. This achievement made him an attractive prospect for Sauber, who signed him away from the papaya team.

Despite being part of a large rookie class in 2025, Bortoleto and his F2 rival Isack Hadjar remained somewhat under the radar. The spotlight was on Lewis Hamilton’s replacement, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, and Ferrari’s standout driver, Oliver Bearman. While Hadjar quickly gained recognition, Bortoleto has also had the chance to prove himself with a more competitive Sauber. Although he aims higher than sixth place at the Hungarian Grand Prix, he remains grateful for the opportunity.

“I am a happy guy, grateful for what I am experiencing and the opportunities I have had,” Bortoleto said. “I have several friends who are fully capable of deserving a chance in Formula 1, talented guys who would do anything to be in the position I am in today, and that is something I often think about. It drives me to work hard, to give my all in everything I do to make the most of the opportunity I have been given.”

Overcoming Challenges

Bortoleto’s journey has not been without obstacles. At 12, he moved from Brazil to Italy, where he excelled in karting before transitioning to single-seaters. In 2022, during his second season in Formula Regional, he faced engine problems that were not publicly disclosed. He recalls that the only way forward was to work hard and make up ground where possible.

“There were difficult moments,” he said. “In 2022, I had several problems with the engines, but these are issues that are not made public. On that occasion, I realised that the only thing to do was to roll up my sleeves and try to make up ground where possible. There was no point in making excuses, and today, looking back, I realise that that situation made me a stronger driver and a stronger person.”

His perseverance paid off. After resolving technical issues, he started winning and even secured a strong performance during his first test in a Formula 3 car. That experience confirmed his potential, which he later realized by winning the title in the following season.

The Role of Mentorship

The arrival of two-time F1 world champion Fernando Alonso and his A14 management team in mid-2022 was a pivotal moment for Bortoleto. Alonso provided invaluable guidance, helping him navigate the pressures of racing in front of major teams. Bortoleto credits this mentorship as a significant factor in his growth.

“Fernando came on board in mid-2022 and it was a very important step, a great added value,” he said. “When I entered the circuit for the first time, I realised that I would be racing under the eyes of all the major Formula 1 teams, so I asked Fernando for lots of advice on how to manage the race weekend, the pressure, the expectations, and many other things.”

Career Progression

Winning in 2023 catapulted Bortoleto into the spotlight. His success caught the attention of McLaren, where he joined the young driver program. Despite the team’s commitment to its current drivers, McLaren supported his move to Sauber, allowing him to pursue his F1 dreams.

“The start of the championship was not easy,” Bortoleto admitted. “Within the team, my contribution has always been judged positively, but coming from two championship wins, finding myself fighting at the bottom of the standings was mentally difficult to accept. Ambition is always difficult to control, but then, race after race, the situation improved a lot and I found myself in the top 10, which was a great feeling.”

Team Dynamics and Personal Relationships

Bortoleto’s relationship with his teammate, Nico Hulkenberg, has been positive despite their age difference. He celebrated Hulkenberg’s podium finish at the British Grand Prix, highlighting the mutual respect between them.

“Nico is a great person and a great driver,” Bortoleto said. “When he crossed the finish line in third place at Silverstone, it was very emotional. He is helping me a lot. I have learned and continue to learn a lot from him, and when you have a good relationship with someone, I think it comes naturally to share some of their joy.”

Building Connections

Bortoleto’s friendship with Max Verstappen has also been notable. They bond over virtual racing and simulators, with Verstappen offering guidance during Bortoleto’s early F3 season. Their connection highlights the supportive nature of the F1 community.

“My parents would really like to follow me to the races, but they are very busy in Brazil,” Bortoleto shared. “My father manages the Stock Car championship and has a lot to do. Rubens (Barrichello), Felipe (Massa), and many other drivers race in the series. My father has always been a huge fan, but when he was young he didn’t have much money, so he started from scratch.”

Future Goals and Challenges

As Bortoleto continues his journey with Sauber, he remains focused on the future. The team is preparing for Audi’s official entry in 2026, and Bortoleto is adapting to the new environment. While the start of the season was challenging, he believes the team has made significant progress.

“We’ve made a big leap forward,” he said. “Maybe it won’t be possible to aim for points at every track, but I think we’ll be in contention at most of them.”

Bortoleto’s story is one of resilience, gratitude, and ambition. As he continues to grow in Formula 1, his journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring drivers everywhere.
