University of Kigali Celebrates 1,654 Graduates from Class of 2024

The University of Kigali (UoK) recently celebrated the graduation of 1,654 students from the Class of 2024 during its 9th graduation ceremony. The cohort comprised 846 female and 808 male graduates, all of whom were thoroughly trained, assessed, and approved for graduation across five academic schools and one professional school. These graduates are now poised to enter the job market after completing a wide range of academic programs offered by the institution. Among these programs are those under the Centre for Equity and Inclusiveness and the School of Professional Programmes, both of which align with Rwanda’s Vision 2050.

Prof. George Kimathi, Vice Chancellor of UoK, reflected on the significance of the event. He noted that since its accreditation in 2013, the university has fostered an intercultural community of approximately 10,000 students from over 38 nationalities. The institution continues to produce graduates who are not only academically strong but also leaders in their respective fields across various trades.

To ensure academic excellence, most graduates have undergone additional training beyond their prescribed curriculum. This includes certifications such as the International Certificate in Digital Literacy (ICDR), Certified Public Accountants, language training, and more. These initiatives contribute significantly to Rwanda’s vision and the broader higher education landscape.

Strategic Partnerships and Global Positioning

UoK is actively expanding its regional and global presence through strategic partnerships, research, and globally relevant programs. One key partnership is with the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA), a regional body that facilitates integration within the region. This collaboration enables seamless credit transfers between universities, student and staff exchanges, and recognition of credits across institutions.

Kimathi emphasized that the university will continue to champion global green ambitions, starting with the construction of a new campus in Kimihurura. This modern facility, designed to accommodate 12,000 students, will feature natural lighting and recycling features, making it an exemplary model of sustainable architecture.

In addition to its commitment to sustainability, UoK is focused on excellence in research. The university has introduced a virtual laboratory for conducting experiments remotely using 3D models, which has become a mainstream teaching method, especially for subjects where local facilities may be limited.

Internationalisation and Collaborations

The university, now ranked among the top five in Rwanda, has a strategic focus on internationalisation and partnerships. It has established collaborations with over 35 universities locally and internationally, including Strathmore University Business School, Dominion University College, International Business Academy, University of Fort Hare, Université de Paris, New Bulgarian University, and Kenyatta University. These partnerships allow for the exchange of staff and students, providing valuable experiences and opportunities for growth.

Promoting Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity

The campus has integrated unique programs aimed at supporting individuals who might otherwise be left behind. These initiatives are spearheaded by the Center for Equity and Inclusiveness, which fosters an environment that values diversity, inclusion, and equity. The center offers various programs that promote accessibility and inclusivity in education, including the Certificate in Sign Language, Certificate in Psychological Counselling and Leadership, Certificate in Special Needs Education Management, Certificate in Dyslexia Studies, and Certificate in Autism Studies.

Samuel Kabera, Director of the Center for Equity and Inclusiveness, highlighted the importance of these programs in ensuring that every individual feels welcomed, respected, and supported. The center advocates for equitable treatment and representation across all university activities, promoting policies that dismantle barriers and celebrate diverse cultures and identities.

Professional Programmes and Industry Focus

Charles Kombo Omanyo, Director of the School of Professional and Executive Programmes, emphasized that all professional programs offered at UoK are industry-focused. The university uniquely blends academic and professional programs, offering flexible scheduling options such as day, evening, or weekend sessions.

UoK has several partnerships with corporate and accreditation bodies, including the Project Management Institute, CASEM, ICPAR, and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). These programs have positively impacted students’ careers by bridging the skills gap and standardizing requirements.

Success Stories and Scholarships

During the ceremony, Frank Marisa from the Bachelor of Science with Honours in Finance was awarded a full scholarship to pursue a Master’s degree at UoK. This opportunity was made possible through a partnership with the East African Development Bank, represented by Janet Gatera, the Country Manager.

Obed Imabahafi, 25, the best overall performer who graduated in Business Information Technology with a perfect GPA of 5, credited his success to consistency and passion. He emphasized the role of knowledgeable lecturers who provided both academic and mentorship support.

Latifah Umutoni, the best performer in the School of Business Management and Economics, attributed her success to the supportive environment and the collaborative nature of the campus. She highlighted the benefits of learning alongside international students, which enriched her educational experience.
