The Controversy Surrounding KWAM 1 and the Airport Incident
A renowned figure in the Nigerian music industry, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, widely known as KWAM 1 or K1 De Ultimate, has publicly apologized for a recent altercation at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. This incident occurred on August 5, 2025, when the 68-year-old musician was involved in a confrontation with airport officials.
The situation escalated when KWAM 1 attempted to board a ValueJet flight to Lagos with a flask that he claimed contained water. However, airport authorities reportedly prevented him from boarding due to the flask’s weight and the suspicion that it might contain alcohol, which is not allowed on aircraft in Nigeria.
FAA's Statement on the Incident
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) mentioned that KWAM 1 tried to board the flight with an “unidentified liquid substance.” According to FAAN, the musician disregarded warnings from aviation security personnel and the flight captain. Additionally, the authority alleged that KWAM 1 spilled alcohol on aviation staff while they were trying to inspect the contents of his flask.
Footage of the incident captured the moments when KWAM 1 narrowly avoided being hit by the wing of the aircraft as the pilot started taxiing without following proper protocols. This event drew significant attention and sparked discussions across various platforms.
Initial Reaction and Claims
KWAM 1 initially responded to the incident by denying any wrongdoing. He claimed that the content of his flask was simply “plain drinking water” that had been given to him at the airport lounge while he waited for his flight. He argued that the substance was not alcohol, as some reports suggested.
Despite this, the controversy continued to unfold, leading to further scrutiny and public interest.
Apology and Explanation
On Friday, August 8, 2025, KWAM 1 addressed the media during a press briefing. He expressed deep regret over the incident, stating that it was never his intention to cause any disruption. However, he insisted that he was not carrying alcohol in his flask but rather water.
KWAM 1 explained that he suffers from chronic dehydration and that his doctor strongly advised him to stay constantly hydrated. He emphasized that he always carries a water flask with him and that the one he had on the day of the incident contained only water, not alcohol, as falsely reported.
He added that he passed through two security screenings with the flask empty. The flask was filled with water at the airport lounge just before heading to the tarmac. KWAM 1 noted that this fact can be verified by CCTV footage at the airport lounge. He also clarified that he hadn’t even boarded the plane, let alone been deboarded.
Acknowledgment of Concerns
While emphasizing his innocence, KWAM 1 acknowledged the concerns that arose from the incident. He stated that it was never his intention to cause any disruption or violate aviation protocols. He reiterated his unwavering patriotism and loyalty to Nigeria, highlighting his efforts over the years to promote the Nigerian brand globally through his music.
KWAM 1 expressed his commitment to upholding the values and responsibilities that come with being a global ambassador of Nigerian music and culture. He extended his unreserved and heartfelt apology to the Presidency, Ministry of Aviation, FAAN, NCAA, ValueJet, fellow Nigerians, and his fans worldwide who have shown concern since the incident occurred.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of clear communication and adherence to regulations, especially in high-stakes environments like airports. It also highlights the need for understanding and empathy when dealing with public figures and their personal circumstances.
