Addressing Nigeria’s Economic Challenges
Muslim professionals in various sectors of Nigeria's economy, under the leadership of The Companion, recently highlighted concerns over the country's economic decline. They expressed disappointment that Nigeria has slipped from being Africa's largest economy to fourth place and from 24th to 27th globally, despite ongoing government reforms.
At the public lecture during the group’s biennial elective national conference, the National Amir, Engineer Kamil Olalekan, criticized Nigeria's current global GDP ranking of 53rd, despite the nation's vast resources. The event, themed “Thriving Amidst Adversity: Strategies for Survival in Nigeria’s Challenging Economy,” aimed to explore solutions to the nation's economic issues.
The conference emphasized the importance of placing the welfare of Nigerians above all other considerations in policy-making. The Amir encouraged resilience, creativity, and strategic adaptation among Nigerians to tackle the current economic challenges. He described these difficulties as a call to innovate rather than despair.
Key Economic Issues and Solutions
Nigeria is currently facing several significant challenges, including high inflation, a weak naira, fiscal strain, unemployment, insecurity, and corruption. More than 70% of Nigerians now live in multidimensional poverty. However, the Amir believes that with creativity, income diversification, and sound financial habits, Nigerians can not only survive but also grow.
He identified agriculture, technology, and services as sectors with immense potential. The Amir called on governments to prioritize people's welfare over political interests and invest in agriculture, education, security, and healthcare. Additionally, he urged Nigerians to support "Made in Nigeria" products to stimulate production and strengthen the economy.
Expert Advice and Community Response
Dr. Sulayman Ibrahim, the guest lecturer at the event, advised Nigerians to adjust their lifestyles, acquire relevant skills, and avoid reckless investments. He emphasized the importance of investing only in what one understands and can afford to lose. Lifestyle changes are crucial, and he encouraged continuous prayer for Nigeria while putting the nation first.
Professor Wahab Egbewole (SAN), the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, praised the initiative of The Companion, urging participants to seize the economic opportunities discussed. Similarly, Oba Ismail Yahaya Alebiosu, the Olupo of Ajase-Ipo, challenged members to apply the lessons learned and think beyond conventional boundaries.
An entrepreneur and member of The Companion, Dr. Sulayman Ibrahim, cautioned against blaming the current administration solely for the economic crisis. He pointed out that each successive government inherits a weaker economy than its predecessor. According to him, the problem lies in corruption, unstable policies, poor infrastructure, and the mindset of youths waiting for government work without taking initiative.
A Call for Change and Collaboration
Sulayman urged Nigerians to change their mindset and lifestyle while calling on the government to address infrastructure gaps. He emphasized the need for a shift in how people perceive and approach issues. The government must provide adequate infrastructure, but citizens must also adopt new habits, support local production, and live within their means.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including the Kwara State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Amina Ahmed El-Imam; Oba Ismail Yahaya Alebiosu, Olupo of Ajase-Ipo; Oba Abdul Fatai Oladega Talabi, Aala of Ilala; the Amira of the female wing of the association, The Criterion; and others who shared their goodwill messages.
Moving Forward Together
The discussions underscored the importance of collective effort in addressing Nigeria's economic challenges. By fostering a culture of innovation, supporting local industries, and making informed financial decisions, Nigerians can contribute to a more resilient and prosperous economy. It is a call to action for both individuals and the government to work together towards sustainable development and national progress.
