APC Leadership in Enugu State Emphasizes Fairness and Inclusivity

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State has made it clear that there will be no automatic pathway for defectors to secure key positions within the party. Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, emphasized this during an expanded stakeholders’ meeting held in Enugu on Saturday. He warned that no individual, regardless of their political standing, would be allowed to bypass the party’s internal processes.

Nnaji stated that while the APC is open to welcoming new members from across the state, all aspirants must go through the party’s primaries. This approach ensures transparency and fairness in selecting candidates for leadership roles. He highlighted that some individuals, whom he referred to as “politically displaced politicians,” had been attempting to join the APC from Abuja with the intent of taking over the party structure without proper due process.

He said, “The APC has come to stay; that is why from every nook and cranny, people want to join the APC. We want people to come in, but we will not give them a free ticket. They must go to contest.” Nnaji stressed that anyone wishing to run for governor of Enugu State must participate in the party’s primary elections, which will serve as the main selection process.

This principle applies to all aspiring candidates, including those holding high political offices. Nnaji added, “If the President of Nigeria wants to come and run for the governor of Enugu State, let him come, we will support him. If the former governor of anywhere wants to join us, let him come, we will run the primaries.”

Addressing Internal Challenges

Nnaji also addressed the issue of “internally displaced politicians” who lack a political base and are moving from one party to another without commitment. He described these individuals as being “from pillar to post” and urged them to find a stable political home. He noted that such individuals would continue to struggle until they commit to a party.

He expressed confidence that the APC leadership in Enugu has a clear focus and strategy, undeterred by political maneuverings from opponents. The minister assured party members that the APC was committed to its mission and was making progress toward achieving its goals.

New Members Pledge Support for 2027 Elections

At the meeting, three members of the House of Representatives who recently defected from the Labour Party to the APC pledged their full commitment to ensuring that the APC secures all elective positions in the state in the 2027 general elections. These include Hon Sunday Umeha (Udi/Ezeagu), Hon Chimobi Atu (Enugu North/Enugu South), and Hon Prof Paul Nnamchi.

Their defection signals a strong shift in political dynamics within Enugu State and reinforces the APC's growing influence. These new members have pledged to work tirelessly to ensure the party’s success in upcoming elections.

Enugu Progressive Group Supports Tinubu and Mbah

Meanwhile, a political pressure group within the APC, the Enugu Progressive Group, has thrown its weight behind the re-election bids of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Peter Mbah in 2027. The group, comprising members from all 260 wards and 17 local government areas in the state, held a meeting where it unanimously endorsed Tinubu for a second term.

The group cited federal projects and policy reforms that have benefited the South-East region. Its leader and former APC state chairman, Dr Ben Nwoye, praised Tinubu’s economic policies, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange rates. He stated that these reforms, although painful in the short term, are laying a solid foundation for long-term economic stability.

Nwoye also highlighted tangible benefits seen in Enugu State, such as the establishment of new institutions, appointments, and infrastructure. He argued that these developments demonstrate the positive impact of Tinubu’s policies and that the president deserves a second term.

Conclusion

The APC in Enugu State continues to reinforce its commitment to fair and transparent processes, while also welcoming new members who align with its values and objectives. With strong support from both new and existing members, the party is positioning itself for a successful campaign in the 2027 elections. The Enugu Progressive Group’s endorsement of Tinubu further strengthens the APC’s political momentum in the state.
