PPP's Commitment to Democratic Principles and Electoral Strategy
Syed Hassan Murtaza, the Central Punjab General Secretary of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), has emphasized the party's stance on maintaining democratic integrity and political stability. He stated that the PPP cannot function with individuals who undermine the system and contribute to prolonged authoritarian rule. The party has endured significant challenges due to its policy of reconciliation, but it has consistently prioritized the nation's interests over personal gains.
At a press conference held at the Peoples Secretariat in Model Town, Murtaza was joined by several prominent leaders including Usman Malik, Chaudhry Aslam Gul, Jamil Manj, Allama Yousaf Awan, Mian Ayub, Chaudhry Akhtar, Asif Mahmood Nagra, Aisha Nawaz Chaudhry, Bushri Manzoor Maneka, and Rao Khalid. Many other party workers were also present, underscoring the widespread support for the party's direction.
Electoral Plans and Independent Campaigning
Murtaza outlined the PPP's upcoming electoral strategy, stating that the party will contest elections from two national constituencies in Central Punjab and one provincial constituency in Mianwali. He noted that four candidates have submitted their papers for NA-129 and two for NA-66. The party is committed to conducting its campaign independently, without any external assistance. The nominated candidates will begin their campaigns immediately after the ticket announcement by the Parliamentary Board.
The General Secretary also mentioned that the legal, media, election, and coordination committees are being notified. He stressed that as elections approach, the PPP will be actively visible on the streets, engaging with the public and addressing their concerns.
Critique of PTI's Actions and Government Responsibilities
Murtaza criticized the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for its protests and road-blocking activities, questioning the timing and motives behind such actions. He pointed out that PTI often protests during national events or when foreign leaders arrive, suggesting that this behavior lacks clarity and purpose. He emphasized that providing security for religious pilgrimages like Arbaeen is the government’s responsibility, not an excuse for imposing restrictions. The government should promptly issue orders to open land routes and ensure the rights of pilgrims.
He also highlighted the need for transparency and accountability within the government. Murtaza urged the authorities to stop spreading half-truths and to avoid targeting specific communities. He called for the identification of corrupt bureaucrats without labeling the entire bureaucracy as corrupt.
Addressing Climate Change and Farmer Issues
Murtaza raised concerns about the impact of climate change on farmers, emphasizing that they are not part of any criminal network but a vulnerable class whose struggles are often overlooked. He called for immediate declaration of flood-affected areas as disaster zones and for measures to protect crops on thousands of acres.
Internal Unity and Election Integrity
The PPP leader urged party workers to set aside personal differences and focus on the upcoming by-elections. He criticized the Election Commission for its controversial role in shaping results, citing past issues in the Sambrial by-election where discrepancies were observed in vote counting. Murtaza reminded the party of its historical resilience, referencing the 1988 election when the PPP had only 17 votes in opposition.
He concluded by affirming that ideologies can be weakened but not eliminated, and that the PPP must continue to address issues through political means. While he acknowledged his own limitations, he emphasized the importance of public opinion and the right of people to express their views. He also highlighted the efforts of Chairman Bilawal Bhutto in representing Pakistan's interests on the international stage.
