Aer highlighted that the shift towards pork began several years ago when the attacks by armed herdsmen intensified. Many who were previously not accustomed to eating pork started to turn to it as a substitute for beef. This change in dietary habits has continued to grow, leading to the current situation where pork is becoming less accessible to the average consumer.

The impact of this shift is also evident in the restaurant industry. Madam Ngunna Igbaar, a major restaurant owner in Makurdi town, shared her concerns about the rising cost of pork. She noted that what was once considered a cheap source of protein for the poor is now becoming unaffordable for many.

Igbaar mentioned that in the past, customers would purchase pork in smaller portions, often priced at N100 or N200. However, due to the increased cost, these portions are now significantly larger, with prices reaching up to N1000. This has affected the business model of restaurants, as they struggle to keep up with the changing demands and costs.

Moreover, the perception of pork has shifted from being a "dirty meat" to a preferred choice for many. Some customers have even expressed a strong stance against consuming beef, citing the desire to avoid supporting those involved in the attacks on their communities.
