Uasin Gishu woman all smiles after being gifted fully furnished house with water tank, shopping
  • It was a moment of celebration for an elderly woman who had been living in a dilapidated shelter for years
  • Life had been tough since the demise of her husband, as she was left with the burden of caring for their children
  • Speaking to zaia news.co.ke, a source close to her shared her reaction after receiving a beautiful gift from the government

Having a decent shelter is one of the most important assets one can own, and a woman from Uasin Gishu knows how vital it is.

The woman from Sigoi could not hold back her delight after she moved into a brand-new and decent home.

Nelly Chebor Cheruiyot could not believe her luck as she became the proud new homeowner in her area.

When did Cheruiyot lose her husband?

It was like a dream, as a source close to her revealed to zaia news.co.kejust how excited and grateful she was.

"With tears rolling down her cheeks, she appreciated the Principal Secretary for the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, Raymond Omollo, and President William Samoei Ruto for considering her to receive a new house," the source said.

Several pictures shared validated Cheruiyot's overwhelming reaction. She lost her husband in 2009, and since then, her life took a drastic turn, forcing her to work harder to provide for herself and her family.

The 51-year-old was left to care for their three children, who looked up to her following their father's death.

Photo of Cheruiyot's old house

She had been living in an old and poor mud house, which was not safe due to its deteriorated condition and urgently needed to be replaced.

The house had a mix of fairly new and very old, rugged iron sheets covering the top. Photos showed loads of firewood stacked nearby and an old wheelbarrow just a few metres away, which she used for domestic purposes.

Despite the poor condition of her home, the environment appeared clean, and there was a small garden behind the house that indicated her source of income.

Cheruiyot was a member of the Widows Empowerment Program (WEP), a group that supports women who have lost their husbands by helping them become independent.

Does Cheruiyot's house have electricity?

During her house opening ceremony, Cheruiyot was joined by friends who celebrated her breakthrough with songs and dances of jubilation.

They were genuinely happy for her, their broad smiles expressing their joy at Cheruiyot’s success.

Cheruiyot was gifted a fully furnished house equipped with electricity, a water tank, and groceries to start her new life.

She posed for photos inside and outside her new home, cherishing the special moment with the well-wishers.

Kisumu granny moves into new house

In another story, it was not the first time PS Omollo had stepped in to help a widow as he had also supported a 75-year-old grandmother from Kisumu.

The Kisumu-based granny had been living in a dilapidated home after losing her loving and supportive husband.

Mama Meresa Amollo Onyonge had barely any support from her family, who deserted her after her husband's death.

However, her time of elevation came when she was gifted a new house by the civil servant, restoring her joy and dignity.
