Ukraine’s Stance on Territorial Integrity and Peace Talks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made it clear that his country will not compromise on its territorial integrity. During a public statement, he emphasized that Ukraine "will not give Russia any rewards for what it has done" and that "Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier." This firm stance reflects the nation's determination to protect its sovereignty amid ongoing conflict.

Earlier this week, former U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that a potential peace deal could involve "some swapping of territories," a notion that has sparked significant debate. In response, Russia proposed a ceasefire in exchange for the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk. However, this proposal has been met with resistance from both Ukrainian and European officials.

According to reports from the Wall Street Journal, citing two European officials, Ukrainian and European leaders have presented a counterproposal to Russia's ceasefire plan. The proposal was shared with key U.S. officials, including Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Ukraine envoy Keith Kellogg, and Steve Witkoff. It underscores the need for Ukraine and Europe to be directly involved in any negotiations with Russia. Additionally, the proposal insists that a ceasefire must be implemented before any further steps are taken.

The counterproposal was discussed during a meeting with top U.S. officials in the UK, as reported by the officials. This development highlights the growing concern among international allies about the potential for external negotiations without Ukraine's involvement.

Concerns Over Excluding Ukraine from Peace Talks

Zelenskyy has strongly opposed any peace talks that exclude Kyiv. He warned that decisions made without Ukraine's participation would be "dead decisions" that would not lead to lasting peace. His message is clear: any resolution to the conflict must include Ukraine's voice at the table.

In a statement posted on Telegram, Zelenskyy reiterated that Ukraine’s territorial integrity, as enshrined in its constitution, must remain non-negotiable. He stressed that true peace can only be achieved if Ukraine is actively involved in the discussions.

European leaders have also voiced their support for Ukraine’s position. French President Emmanuel Macron stated on social media that "Ukraine’s future cannot be decided without the Ukrainians," adding that "Europeans will also necessarily be part of the solution, as their own security is at stake." Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for a "just and lasting peace that respects Ukraine's independence and sovereignty."

Zelenskyy also engaged with Finnish President Alexander Stubb, expressing gratitude for Finland's continued support. He highlighted the shared challenges between Ukraine and Finland, noting that both nations have the longest borders with Russia in Europe and understand the threats posed by Russian aggression.

Ongoing Conflict and Civilian Impact

Despite diplomatic efforts, the war continues to affect civilians across Ukraine. On Saturday, a Russian drone strike in the suburbs of Kherson resulted in two deaths and 16 injuries. Another incident in the Zaporizhzhia region claimed two lives after a drone hit a car. In Kharkiv, Russian forces launched drones targeting the city, with one striking a furniture store and injuring five people, including a 17-year-old girl and three women with shrapnel wounds.

Ukraine’s air force reported intercepting 16 out of 47 Russian drones launched overnight, while 31 drones hit targets in 15 different locations. They also claimed to have shot down one of the two missiles deployed by Russia. Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry stated that its air defenses intercepted 97 Ukrainian drones over Russia and the Black Sea, along with 21 more in the early hours of Saturday.

These attacks underscore the ongoing threat faced by Ukrainian citizens and the relentless nature of the conflict. As both sides continue to engage in military actions, the world watches closely to see how the situation will evolve in the coming days.
