Nigerians Juggling 100 Apps Across Top 5 Leagues

Just a few Nigerian players have managed to reach 100 or more appearances for multiple clubs within Europe's top five leagues — an achievement highlighting both enduring career and steady performance at the elite level. PUNCH Sports Extra’s PETER AKINBO highlights the exclusive group that has earned this recognition.

Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha

Several footballers throughout history have not been able to match the style and excitement brought by Austin 'Jay-Jay' Okocha, and the Nigerian star achieved this while playing for three clubs in the top five leagues. He played 113 matches for Paris Saint-Germain, with 84 of those in Ligue 1, before joining Bolton Wanderers, where he became a fan favorite, making a total of 145 appearances, including 124 in the Premier League. He also featured in 116 games for Eintracht Frankfurt, with 90 of them occurring in the Bundesliga.

Okocha's tenure at PSG provided him with continental exposure, featuring in six UEFA Champions League matches, while his period at Frankfurt offered him a chance to make a name for himself in European football. At Bolton, he was the central figure of a team that performed remarkably well above its standing in the Premier League, with his remarkable dribbling skills and impressive goals making him one of the most cherished foreign players of his time in England.

Interestingly, his nephew Alex Iwobi has taken after him, becoming one of just two Nigerians to accumulate 100 appearances for three clubs in the top five leagues — a family tradition that is unlikely to be replicated soon.

Nwankwo Kanu

Nwankwo Kanu's sustained presence and influence at the highest level of English football solidified his status as one of Nigeria's most significant contributions to European soccer. The tall striker played 197 matches for Arsenal in various competitions, with 119 of those in the Premier League, netting 44 goals overall and helping secure several FA Cups, playing a key role in one of the most successful eras in the club's history.

He subsequently continued his top-tier career at Portsmouth, making a total of 166 appearances and achieving the milestone of exactly 100 Premier League matches for the club on the south coast, while contributing 17 league goals. His FA Cup winners' medal with Portsmouth in 2008, when he netted the sole goal in the final against Cardiff City, stands as one of the most memorable moments of his professional journey.

Obafemi Martins

Obafemi Martins stood out as one of the most dynamic forwards of his era, blending incredible speed with an innate ability to find the back of the net. He played 136 matches for Inter Milan, finding the net 49 times in various competitions, including 88 Serie A games where he scored 28 goals. Additionally, he played a key role in Inter's European challenges, appearing in 25 Champions League matches and scoring nine goals.

Following his departure from Italy, Martins had a comparable influence in the Premier League while playing for Newcastle United, accumulating 104 total appearances and 88 in league matches, netting 28 goals in the process. He consistently posed a danger to opposing teams for the Magpies and also played a role in the UEFA Cup, scoring six goals in nine games for the club.

Yakubu Aiyegbeni

Yakubu Aiyegbeni, commonly referred to as The Yak, was among the Premier League's most consistent and underappreciated strikers. He played 104 matches for Middlesbrough, netting 35 goals in various competitions, including 25 in 73 Premier League fixtures. His strong build and clinical finishing made him a persistent danger, and he also added 14 goals in 15 FA Cup games for the team.

He continued to adopt that style at Everton, featuring in 107 matches and netting 33 goals overall, including 25 Premier League goals across 82 league fixtures. He also added four goals in eight UEFA Cup games for the Toffees, showcasing his talent on the European level.

Alex Iwobi

Among the players listed, Alex Iwobi remains the only one currently active, having steadily established one of the most reliable careers for a Nigerian in the top five leagues.

Iwobi played 149 times for Arsenal, including 100 in the Premier League and 17 in the Europa League, before moving to Everton, where he made 140 appearances, with 123 of them in the top flight. He has now become a key player at Fulham, where his 100th appearance this season marked an impressive triple achievement, with 88 of those matches coming in the league.

Throughout his Premier League career with the three teams, Iwobi has made 311 appearances. He is still competing at the highest level and keeps building a legacy that already positions him among the best Nigerian footballers to have played in European football.

Honourable mentions

Joseph Yobo almost made the cut despite having an impressive career, with more than 100 games for Everton. However, the other team where he achieved this mark was Fenerbahce, a club that competes outside the top five leagues, which means he doesn't fulfill the requirements.

Kelechi Iheanacho is also not included, even though he has achieved a double century in his own right — he played more than 200 times for Leicester City. However, our standards demand 100 appearances across multiple clubs, and his highest count outside Leicester City was at Manchester City, where he made only 64 appearances.
