Celebrating Excellence: India's Achievements at the World Police and Fire Games
India has made a significant mark on the global stage with its impressive performance at the 21st World Police and Fire Games-2025 held in Birmingham, Alabama, USA. The Indian contingent returned with an extraordinary achievement of winning 613 medals, showcasing their dedication, skill, and commitment to excellence.
The Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah, addressed the felicitation ceremony for the Indian Police and Fire Brigade contingent, expressing his pride in their accomplishments. He emphasized that the next World Police and Fire Games will be hosted in India, marking a new chapter in the country’s sporting journey.
Setting Ambitious Goals for Future Success
Shah outlined clear objectives for the upcoming games, urging every police force under the All India Police Sports Control Board to participate actively. He stressed the importance of inclusivity and set a target for each team to win at least three medals. By achieving these goals, the record of 613 medals is expected to be surpassed naturally.
In addition to celebrating the achievements, the Union Minister announced an incentive amount of Rs 4,38,85,000 for the Indian team. He highlighted that while the Police and Fire Games may not have received much attention in the past, they are now recognized as one of the largest sporting events globally, second only to the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games.
A Focus on Future Competitions
With the 2029 World Police and Fire Games set to take place in Gujarat, Shah called for a focused approach from all athletes. He drew inspiration from the legendary athlete Arjun, emphasizing the need for determination and unity among the teams. While many members of the Indian contingent won medals at the 2025 games, there were also those who did not achieve success. Shah reminded everyone that participation itself is a victory, and the spirit of striving for success should become a habit.
The upcoming games in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Kevadia present a unique opportunity for Indian athletes to showcase their potential. Shah expressed hope that these games will highlight the vast sports potential in India and reinforce the government's efforts to make sports an integral part of people's lives.
Expanding the Vision of Sports in India
The Modi government has been actively working towards hosting major international sporting events, including the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, and Asian Games. These initiatives aim to instill a sporting culture among the population, particularly within security forces like the police and fire brigade.
India has already submitted bids for the 2036 Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games, reflecting the nation's ambition to become a global sports hub. Shah emphasized that the goal is to make sports a natural part of life, ensuring that every individual, regardless of their background, can participate and excel.
Developing a Culture of Winning
Shah underscored the importance of cultivating a mindset that embraces both victory and defeat. He highlighted that sports teach individuals to think broadly and develop resilience. By fostering this attitude among youth, the nation can build a strong foundation for future success.
To support this vision, the Union Home Minister urged the All India Police Sports Control Board to provide world-class coaching and specialized training for medical teams treating sports-related injuries. He assured full support from the Ministry of Sports to ensure these initiatives are implemented effectively.
Encouraging a Sporting Spirit Among Security Forces
Shah called on the Directors General of all Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) to create an environment where every police personnel develops a sporting spirit. He suggested that police officers start their mornings with parades alongside their subordinates and spend evenings playing sports together. This practice can help relieve work-related stress and enhance overall performance.
He also mentioned that the government is taking steps to promote sports within security forces by relaxing service rules and adapting recruitment processes accordingly. Last year, several initiatives were introduced, including changes in recruitment rules for talent identification, formation of 25 outdoor sports teams in each force, and creating combined teams of CAPFs.
Supporting Athletes for the Future
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the sports budget has seen a fivefold increase over the past decade, demonstrating the government's commitment to sports. Significant investments have been made in developing new sports infrastructures. Under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), around 3,000 athletes receive a monthly stipend of Rs 50,000 to prepare for the 2036 Olympic Games.
The Fit India Movement has also played a crucial role in improving athlete selection processes, leading to a threefold increase in the number of medals won in the Olympics, Paralympics, and Asian Games. Shah expressed hope that India will rank in the top five of the medal tally at the 2036 Olympics, highlighting the positive environment for sports that is now emerging across the country.
