Hong Ngoc-Phuc Truong Minh General Hospital, together with four orthopedic trauma centers from Europe and Asia, will host an international workshop dedicated to the intraoperative application of C-arm imaging technology in orthopedic surgery.
According to Dr. Le Quang Huy, MD, PhD, Head of the Department of Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery at Hong Ngoc-Phuc Truong Minh General Hospital, the growing trend toward minimally invasive surgical procedures has made C-arm fluoroscopy an essential component of orthopedic trauma care. The technology helps surgeons accurately identify entry points, anatomical landmarks, and instrument positioning, particularly in minimally invasive spine surgeries, arthroscopic procedures, and complex fracture fixation.
However, optimizing the full capabilities of the C-arm remains challenging, as each surgical case requires a tailored imaging strategy.
In response, Hong Ngoc-Phuc Truong Minh General Hospital is organizing the workshop titled "The Intraoperative Use of C-arm Fluoroscopy in Surgical Practice." Scheduled for Aug. 9, 2025, at the hospital, this event will provide medical professionals a platform to exchange clinical experiences and gain insights into the latest techniques for managing musculoskeletal disorders.
The workshop will feature the participation of global medical technology leader Siemens Healthineers and renowned orthopedic trauma specialists from Austria, Japan, Taiwan (China), and Vietnam. The event will include seven scientific presentations and two live surgical demonstrations, offering a multidimensional perspective on advanced C-arm applications and techniques.
Opening the workshop, Prof. Priv.-Doz. Dr. Dietmar Krappinger, PhD, MBA, Deputy Director of the Level 1 Trauma Center at Innsbruck Medical University in Austria, will present on minimally invasive techniques for acetabular fracture management. His talk, "Acetabular fracture: Imaging assessment and image-guided modern treatment of complex cases," will emphasize the critical role of medical imaging in surgical planning and intraoperative navigation.
Prof. Hiranaka Takafumi, MD, PhD, Director of the Joint Surgery Center at Takatsuki General Hospital in Japan, will share expertise on optimal screw placement in his session titled "Optimizing Intraoperative Imaging during Proximal Femoral Fracture Fixation."
Assoc. Prof. Meng-Huang Wu, MD, PhD, Chairman of Orthopaedics at Taipei Medical University Hospital (Taiwan, China), will present "AI in Endoscopic Spine Surgery: Transforming Precision and Patient Outcomes." This discussion will highlight how artificial intelligence enhances accuracy in lesion localization and streamlines instrument navigation while minimizing damage to surrounding soft tissues, nerves, and blood vessels.
Dr. Ming-Fai Cheng from the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at Taipei Veterans General Hospital will discuss "EUA-based decision and coronoid-first via anterior approach for Terrible Triad Injury of the elbow," elaborating on indications, surgical approach, and sequential management of complex elbow injuries.
A key highlight will be the presentation by Dr. Huy, who will address "Achieving precise cup positioning in total hip arthroplasty." He will share insights on controlling acetabular inclination and anteversion angles under fluoroscopic guidance, techniques critical to reducing dislocation risks and revision rates in total hip replacements.

The workshop will conclude with two experience-sharing sessions: "Hip replacement through direct anterior hip approach and bikini incision," by Dr. Alexander Ko from Taipei Medical University Hospital, and "Surgical treatment strategy for humerus intra-articular fractures," by Dr. Hai Phan Ba, MD, PhD, Deputy Head of Upper Extremities Surgery and Sports Trauma at Viet Duc University Hospital, Hanoi.
Beyond specialized presentations, Hong Ngoc-Phuc Truong Minh General Hospital will showcase the use of advanced 3D C-arm technology in two live-streamed surgical procedures. Vietnamese specialists will perform these surgeries under real-time guidance and consultation from international experts.
A particular highlight will be the spinal surgery demonstration, "Percutaneous pedicle screw fixation using 3D C-arm," led by Assoc. Prof. Trung Ha Kim, MD, PhD, Deputy Medical Director at Hong Ngoc-Phuc Truong Minh General Hospital, with expert consultation from Prof. Dietmar Krappinger.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Trung highlighted, "The advent of 3D C-arm technology integrated with artificial intelligence, capable of automatic lesion detection and segmentation using numbered zones and color mapping, enables precise positioning of screws, plates, and intervention tools with minimal attempts. Furthermore, automated X-ray dose optimization significantly reduces ionizing radiation exposure, ensuring maximum safety for both patients and medical personnel. Hong Ngoc Hospital has invested extensively in infrastructure, skilled personnel, and standardized protocols to effectively utilize 3D C-arm technology, aiming to align orthopedic trauma surgery with international standards."
