Honoring Exceptional Contributions to Italy-Thailand Relations

Italy has recognized two prominent Thai individuals with its highest national honors, acknowledging their remarkable contributions to international relations, philanthropy, and the deepening of cultural and economic ties between Italy and Thailand. The Italian Embassy in Bangkok recently held a special event to present these prestigious awards to Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul and Dr Somsak Leeswadtrakul, celebrating their lifelong dedication to fostering cross-cultural understanding and cooperation.

The ceremony brought together ambassadors, senior diplomats, business leaders, and influential figures from Thai society, all coming together to honor the couple’s outstanding achievements. Their efforts have significantly strengthened bilateral relations, supported various charitable causes, and promoted international collaboration.

Khunying Patama, a distinguished figure in multiple domains, was awarded the title of Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (OMRI). She is a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), President of the Badminton World Federation (BWF), and Chairperson of several key organizations, including the Centre for Morality Promotion and the Cultural Promotion Fund. Her work extends beyond sports into culture, music, and academia, as well as supporting numerous charitable initiatives both within Thailand and globally.

Her husband, Dr Somsak, a renowned business leader and philanthropist, received the Commander of the Order of the Star of Italy (OSI). This honor is reserved for foreign nationals who have made significant contributions to promoting friendly relations and cooperation with Italy. Dr Somsak has built an extensive business empire spanning the steel industry, construction, real estate, and property development. His support for Italian businesses, particularly through projects involving the industrial group Danieli, has been instrumental in strengthening economic ties between the two nations.

Italian Ambassador to Thailand, HE Paolo Dionisi, presided over the event and expressed his admiration for the couple’s accomplishments. He praised Khunying Patama for her energy and continued involvement in various fields, noting that her support was crucial in Italy's successful bid to host the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano-Cortina. He also highlighted her role in promoting cultural and academic exchanges, emphasizing the importance of people-to-people connections in bridging cultural divides.

Regarding Dr Somsak, the ambassador commended his visionary leadership in the steel industry and his commitment to social progress. Despite maintaining a low profile, Dr Somsak has generously supported charitable causes, not only within the Catholic community but also across other religious groups in Thailand. His contributions reflect a deep understanding of the importance of balancing economic growth with social responsibility.

In their acceptance speeches, both honourees expressed gratitude for the recognition and reaffirmed their commitment to fostering international goodwill and sustainable development. Khunying Patama spoke passionately about the power of sport in promoting peace and unity, drawing from her own experiences in sports diplomacy. As Chair of the IOC Culture and Heritage Commission, she pledged continued support for the Milano Cortina 2026 Games, which she described as a celebration of Italy’s heritage and Olympic spirit.

She concluded by dedicating the award to her family, colleagues, and all those who believe in the unifying power of sport. The couple’s legacy continues to inspire, reinforcing the enduring bond between Italy and Thailand through shared values and mutual respect.
