In early July, a video clip captured on a smartphone circulated rapidly across social media platforms, drawing attention to this issue. The footage showed a woman and a man, identified as staff members of an unnamed orphanage, loading items into a van under dim lighting. A volunteer, who regularly donates to the institution, was visibly upset as she watched the scene unfold from a distance. Her emotional reaction highlighted the deep sense of betrayal felt by those who contribute to such causes.
The volunteer confronted the workers, but her concerns were met with indifference. The video ended abruptly when the workers attempted to seize the phone she was using to record the incident. This incident, which quickly went viral, prompted discussions about the integrity of orphanages and the need for accountability.

Investigations revealed that the video was originally shared on TikTok by user Ada Ebekuodike. Upon reaching out to the user, it was discovered that the orphanage in question is located near Holy Ghost Road in Enugu, Enugu State. The individual who recorded the video, Adaobi Molokwu, confirmed that the case had been reported and investigated by local authorities. She mentioned that the orphanage worker physically attacked her during the recording, resulting in damage to her phone.
Despite the incident, attempts to contact the state Police Public Relations Officer for further information were unsuccessful, highlighting the challenges in obtaining transparency in such cases.
A Widespread Problem
Molokwu's experience is not isolated. Volunteers have reported similar issues in various orphanages. Callistus Iheme, a volunteer, described the situation as a “scam” in some facilities he has encountered. He noted that donations often disappear, with materials never reaching the children they are intended for. In one instance, an orphanage in Lagos was shut down after such practices were exposed.
This trend has led Iheme to change his approach, opting to provide cooked food directly to ensure that children receive nourishment. Similarly, a shop owner, Lasisi, shared that family members of orphanage workers sell donated items at low prices in the market, further exacerbating the problem.

Some orphanage workers justify the sale of donated goods as a means to cover operational costs, such as school fees and medical expenses. Kayode Olatunji, a worker at a Lagos-based orphanage, explained that many children require financial support for education and healthcare, and selling supplies helps meet these needs. Mayokun Ajide, a teacher, criticized the corrupt practices in orphanages, emphasizing the irony of religious organizations running these facilities while engaging in unethical behavior.
