A Love Affair with Bologna

In the 18th installment of Travel Hot Takes, Adam Miller shares his personal journey and admiration for Bologna, an Italian city that has captured his heart. While many travelers flock to well-known destinations like Venice and Rome, Adam's story takes a different path, highlighting the charm and unique character of this lesser-known gem.

A Wedding That Changed Everything

My great Italian love affair began at a wedding. More accurately, it was because of a wedding. I had just watched my friends get married in a fairytale ceremony in Tuscany, and I wanted to wrap up the trip with a city break. While everyone else headed for Florence, two of us decided to explore Bologna instead. At the time, I wasn’t sure if we had made the right choice, but as the days passed, I realized that Bologna held something special that I couldn't ignore.

A City of Contrasts

I’ve been to 50 countries, and there’s only one I’ll never return to. However, Bologna is definitely on my list of must-visit places. It's not just about the sights; it's about the experience. I need to be constantly stimulated—whether it's through the bustle of the streets, the smells of local cuisine, or the chance to stumble upon something that changes my perspective.

Planning the Perfect Break

If I'm going to a city, I want a firm plan. I like to have a list of galleries, museums, churches, and dinners booked well in advance. I can be a bit of a nightmare for those who prefer a more relaxed approach, but I believe that structure allows for a more enriching travel experience.

The Must-See Attractions

Bologna's must-see attractions include the Piazza Maggiore, the Basilica di San Petronio, the Two Towers, and the Basilica di Santo Stefano (Seven Churches). These spots are worth visiting, but they weren’t what initially excited me. What truly drew me in was the city's unique spirit.

La Rossa and La Grassa

Bologna is often referred to as La Rossa, 'The Red,' due to its terracotta buildings that have defined its skyline for centuries. The city is also known as La Grassa, 'The Fat,' for its incredible food scene. I've visited many food capitals, including New York, Tokyo, Paris, and Singapore, but Bologna stands out for its affordability and quality.

A Culinary Paradise

Every street in Bologna is lined with incredible cuisine. We were lucky enough to get recommendations from a friend-of-a-friend who lives in the city. She pointed us toward various cheap eats, like Mercato delle Erbe, where we enjoyed a grilled alla Norma toastie that still lingers in my memory. She promised we’d find the 'best gelato in the world' at Cremeria Cavour, and she was right.

The Magic of Simplicity

What makes Bologna truly special is its simplicity. Everything feels calm and easy. Eating, drinking, and exploring all feel effortless compared to other cities. It's one of the few city breaks I've been on where I felt genuinely rejuvenated afterwards.

A City Worth Returning To

I can't imagine staying anywhere else in Italy for a city break now, especially when the Italian train service is so cheap and efficient. Florence is close, Venice is only 70 minutes away, and tickets can be as cheap as £13, making it a great detour destination. I’ve already told you I’m going back, so what are you waiting for?

Conclusion

Bologna offers a unique blend of history, culture, and culinary delights that set it apart from other Italian cities. Its vibrant atmosphere, rich food scene, and welcoming locals make it a destination worth visiting again and again. Whether you're looking for a relaxing getaway or an adventurous exploration, Bologna has something to offer everyone. So why not plan your next trip to this beautiful city?
