Strengthening Ties Between Bangladesh and Malaysia
During a recent visit to Putrajaya, Malaysia, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus expressed his hopes for enhancing financial and investment relations between Bangladesh and Malaysia. He urged the Malaysian government to maintain an open door for Bangladeshi workers, emphasizing their crucial role in fostering bilateral cooperation.
In response, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim highlighted the importance of Bangladesh as a strategic partner. He noted that Bangladeshi workers contribute significantly to the development of both nations. "We want to thank Malaysia for hosting so many of our people, and we hope this door will remain open and become wider," said Prof Yunus. He added that these workers gain valuable experience in Malaysia and return home to start businesses and drive economic growth.
Prof Yunus pointed out that the close relationship between Bangladesh and Malaysia is also driven by the contributions of Bangladeshi workers. Their income sent back home provides stability for families, enabling them to afford education for their children. "They are very happy to work here," he emphasized.
The Chief Adviser also highlighted the opportunities for Malaysian entrepreneurs to invest in Bangladesh. He mentioned the availability of human resources and technology in the country, suggesting that Malaysia could manufacture products for global markets. "We are looking forward to a closer relationship in financial and investment matters," he said.
Prof Yunus shared that his government has been working on various initiatives with Malaysia, covering cultural and multilateral aspects. He thanked the Malaysian people for their support and noted that his interim government has restored order and economic stability in Bangladesh. "We have restored institutions to function within a year, and now we are ready for elections," he stated.
He announced plans to hold national elections in mid-February next year, seeking continued support from Malaysia. "We are looking forward to Malaysia's support always," he added.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim praised Prof Yunus for his efforts in ensuring peace and security in Bangladesh. He mentioned ongoing collaborations in investment, trade, culture, and education. "We consider Bangladesh an important partner because your workers have been instrumental in your development," he said.
Anwar Ibrahim also discussed energy cooperation with PETRONAS and Axiata in the telecommunications sector. He expressed interest in expanding cooperation into areas like Halal, STEM, research, and semiconductors. Additionally, he mentioned the introduction of a Multiple Entry Visa facility to support workers and ensure their job security.
The Malaysian Prime Minister recalled his delegation's stopover in Dhaka last October, underscoring Malaysia's commitment to supporting Bangladesh's peace and progress. He acknowledged Prof Yunus's work in empowering the underprivileged through microcredit and education at Albukhary International University in Kedah.
Several officials accompanied the Chief Adviser during the visit, including Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain, Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul, Energy Adviser Fouzul Kabir Khan, and others. Representatives from business organizations such as the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) and the Bangladesh-Malaysia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BMCCI) were also present.
This visit marks a significant step in deepening the partnership between Bangladesh and Malaysia, focusing on mutual growth and collaboration across various sectors.
